Match report

Bernardo Martins ("Benny")

Panetolikos 0–1 Kifisia · Super League Greece 2025/26 · single-match report

Kifisia's main creative reference in a 4-4-2, playing as the more advanced of the two central midfielders and drifting left to support the winger and link with the strikers. Comfortable receiving under pressure, agile when turning out of tight areas and always looking to play forward; he won the penalty that decided the match. The same risk-taking style produced a high number of possession losses, and his main weakness in this game was errors in passing and decision-making.

Verdict

Positive performance — a first-team option for possession-based game plans

Scouting question

In one away match, how does an attacking midfielder contribute in and out of possession, and what can — and cannot — be concluded from a single game?

Assessment

  • Strength
  • Average / inconsistent
  • Weakness
  • Not assessable

In possession

  • Receiving and turning — Strength

His key attribute in this match: comfortable under pressure, using quick turns to escape tight areas and face forward.

  • Progressive passing — Strength

Consistently looked for the forward pass rather than the easy option, simplifying only when space was very tight.

  • Combination play — Strength

Preferred quick one-twos and short passes to release pressure over physical duels in risky areas.

  • Dribbling — Strength

Close control; hard to dispossess. Beats opponents with agility and changes of direction rather than pace.

  • Set pieces — Strength

Designated taker from the right. After a poor first attempt, delivered an excellent free kick that led to a goal disallowed for offside.

  • Shooting — Average / inconsistent

Willing to shoot from distance, but both attempts were poorly struck.

  • Final ball — Average / inconsistent

Involved often, but his end product in open play was limited in this match.

  • Passing and decision errors — Weakness

Hard to take the ball from, but made a considerable number of passing and decision errors — the main source of his possession losses.

Physical

  • Agility and balance — Strength

Low centre of gravity, quick turns and changes of direction — the base of his game in tight spaces.

  • Pitch coverage — Strength

Covered a wide area, from deep build-up to the final third and both flanks, with a preference for the left.

  • Ground duels — Average / inconsistent

Won his duels through timing and anticipation rather than strength.

  • Stamina — Average / inconsistent

Signs of fatigue from around the 65th minute; substituted on 84.

  • Physicality — Weakness

Not a contact midfielder; avoids physical duels and, under heavy pressure, tends to play backwards.

  • Pace — Weakness

Even after beating his man on the flank, the defender recovered before he could cross.

Mental and tactical

  • Personality on the ball — Strength

Constantly asked for the ball, including dropping to collect it from the goalkeeper.

  • Bravery — Strength

Kept choosing the progressive option after losing the ball; did not hide after mistakes.

  • Game reading — Strength

Anticipated passing lanes and knew when to simplify under pressure.

  • Left-sided drift — Strength

Regularly moved into the left lane and half-space to create overloads with the winger and left-back.

  • Link between lines — Strength

Played on a higher line than the holding midfielder, connecting build-up with the strikers.

  • Risk management — Average / inconsistent

At times forced the forward pass when a simpler option would have kept possession and rhythm.

  • Box presence — Average / inconsistent

Shots came from outside the box; no attacking runs into it were seen.

Out of possession and transitions

  • Zonal defending — Strength

Disciplined within the team's mid-block, pressing opponents who entered his zone.

  • Cutting passing lanes — Strength

Good positioning and body orientation to close inside lanes; most recoveries came in the middle third and his own half.

  • Defensive transition — Strength

Reacted well to danger, stopping potentially dangerous situations and turning them into attacks.

  • Pressing aggression — Weakness

Not a player who applies suffocating pressure on the first line — limits his fit in high-intensity pressing plans.

  • Attacking transition — Average / inconsistent

Carried the ball well in transition but struggled with the final decision several times.

Not assessable in this match

  • Weak foot — Not assessable

No meaningful use of the left foot was seen.

  • Aerial game — Not assessable

No relevant aerial duels — the game didn't test it.

Key moments

  1. 3'Wide free kick on the right — poorly struck, doesn't beat the first defender.
  2. 17'Free kick from about 35 m — excellent delivery; the goal is disallowed for offside.
  3. 21'Shot from 24 m after a team-mate's pass — saved.
  4. 41'Recovers the ball in a dangerous opposition attack, re-offers and plays a firm pass into the dropping striker, breaking the line.
  5. 58'Beats two opponents, launches the counter himself and wins the penalty that decides the match.
  6. 69'Excellent first touch on a lofted ball, then a poorly struck shot from 21 m.
  7. 72'Moves to right midfield after a substitution; his role becomes one of containment.
  8. 84'Substituted.

Interpretation

A technically gifted creator who suits possession-based plans: he receives under pressure, plays forward and links midfield with attack. The trade-off is risk — the same style that creates danger also produced many turnovers — and he is not a pressing or duel-based midfielder. His team protected the lead from the 58th minute, which shaped his role in the final half hour.

Summary

To improve

  • Judge when to take risks, especially in the middle third, and cut errors in passing and decisions
  • Strike quality from distance
  • Aggression in pressing and duels for high-intensity games
  • Arrivals in the box and the quality of the final pass

Method

One full match watched on video, with notes taken by minute. Each attribute is rated as a strength, average/inconsistent, a weakness, or not assessable in this match. The team's game plan is described first, so that individual behaviour isn't confused with team instructions — for example, his low pressing numbers partly reflect a mid-block with no high press.

Evidence used

My own observation of the complete match. Match statistics from data providers were consulted while writing but are not reproduced here.

Uncertainty and limits

  • A single match: everything here describes this game and needs confirming over more matches.
  • Game state changed his role after the 58th minute and again after moving to the right on 72.
  • Next steps from the original report: watch two or three more full matches, including one against a high-pressing, physical midfield and one where his team has to chase the game, and review his set-piece deliveries and possession losses by zone over recent matches.
